Portrait of a Blogger

Posted in epistaxis, life with tags , , on May 25, 2009 by drachenreiter

I personally do not really like blogging. It’s a fact that my bestfriend does it way better than me. My lack of interest is evidenced by the fact that I have already created a dozen or more blogs in different blog and social networking sites – with a promise that will be the last blog that I will maintain. Customary, I also made that pseudo-promise on this very blog.

But first things first, allow me to let your noses bleed – a BLOG – is a contraction of the word weblog which is an internet/web site maintained by an individual or group of persons with regular posts or entries expressing their varied views about anything under the sun. These entries usually presented in a reverse-chronological order may merit a wide array of reaction ranging from simple praises or comments to death-threats and global pursuits of human-annihilation. Though there are reports that some posts may have caused dementia in a number of humans. (The veracity of such information, sadly, I cannot verify).

Content also varies from blog to blog given the diversity of the human brain and ego that goes with the writers blogging about anything worth blogging about. Worth is not even an issue. Tons of the things being blogged about are simply and utterly worthless (such as this one, but I bet you can make an exception).

Blogging stats compiled by the National Institute for Technology and Liberal Education (NITLE) estimates a total of 2.8 million likely weblogs. Roughly 70% of these weblogs are in English (or Anglo weblogs).

NITLE is a community-based, non-profit initiative that provides tools and resources for collaboration, professional development programs, and information services to undergraduate-centered colleges, universities, and educational organizations. It is an initiative of ITHAKA, a non-profit organization that seeks to accelerate the productive uses of information technologies for the benefit of higher education around the world.

I was hoping I can post the figures here but it seems too tasking for my part because of formatting issues (perhaps on a later time, just message me if you want to see the full text of the study). Given these numbers, one can simply imagine the things people post online. The post varies depending on what kind of blogger you are. This is better exemplified by the comic strip shown below.

Kinds of Bloggers

It’s just sad to know that most of the content of the blogs are simply trash. Studies show that the internet is being prolifirated by porn – around 40% of the entire web content is adult-related and only around 15%-25% is really useful information.

Now, how can we remedy such a problem? I highly doubt that it can be remedied at all. As they say, we are living in the space/computer age and the advances of technology is leaping exponentially. Noble maybe are the intentions of the creators of the web, but it is currently being used for all sorts of vile and malicious activities. I no longer need to make a litany here, I know that you know what I am talking about.

Now as bloggers, let us realize that the power we have in our hands is very consuming. Whatever we write/show in here can make or break a person, a company, a government, or whatever that maybe. It is, however, my hope that someday the web will eventually be weeded out from all things “evil”.

I just pray that my blog isn’t part of those going to be pruned. (hehehe)

Just my thoughts.

Now you know.
